Celebrating J.D. Murray’s contributions to Mathematical Biology

This special collection celebrates, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, the enormous contribution that Professor James D. Murray FRS has made to the field of mathematical biology. To reflect the numerous areas in which he has worked, the papers in this collection showcase the application of mathematics across a broad range of areas in the biological, ecological and medical sciences.

Editors

  • Professor Philip K. Maini

Philip K. Maini is Professor of Mathematical Biology at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, and Director of the Wolfson Centre for Mathematical Biology, founded in 1983 by Professor J.D. Murray. He did his doctoral and post-doctoral research under the supervision of Professor Murray before moving to the University of Utah. He moved back to Oxford in 1990. Philip’s research involves modelling spatio-temporal phenomena in biology and medicine, with applications in the areas of pattern formation, wound healing, and tumour growth.

  • Professor Mark A. J. Chaplain

Mark A.J. Chaplain holds the Gregory Chair of Applied Mathematics at the University of St Andrews (where Prof. J.D. Murray obtained his PhD in 1956). His main area of research is mathematical oncology – modelling all aspects of the growth and treatment of solid tumours, including: gene regulatory networks and transcription factors, the immune response to cancer, avascular growth, tumour-angiogenesis, vascular growth, invasion and metastasis, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. He also has interests in pattern formation and theoretical ecology.

  • Professor Mark Lewis

Mark Lewis is Canada Research Chair in Mathematical Biology at the University of Alberta. He was a graduate student with Professor J.D. Murray at the University of Oxford (1990). With a research focus in spatial ecology, he has supervised over 50 graduate students and postdocs and has published 8 books and more than 200 papers. He is a Chief Editor of the Journal of Mathematical Biology.

  • Professor Jonathan Sherratt

Jonathan Sherratt has been Professor of Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University since January 1998. He was an undergraduate at the University of Cambridge (1985-1988), followed by graduate work at the University of Washington. His doctorate from the University of Oxford (1991) was supervised by J.D. Murray, FRS and P.K. Maini, FRS. He did postdoctoral work at Oxford, and was a Lecturer (1994-1997) at the University of Warwick before moving to Heriot-Watt. Jonathan Sherratt works on the application of mathematics to ecology, cell biology and medicine, with a particular focus on phenomena involving wave propagation and spatiotemporal patterns.
