Abstract

In this chapter, we introduce the various types of prerequisites that help frame the urban design process. As explained in the introduction, we describe in situ requirements and assumptions of the word prerequisites. Prerequisites provide the starting point of an urban design project. They may be established by the client, and they can be defined by the natural and cultural conditions of the site and therefore included in the initial information provided by the client or by the law, the local plan, or the zoning ordinance. Specific environmental characteristics of a site establish a framework for the design. For instance, it would make no sense to propose an urban design of igloos in the tropics or of grass huts for the Arctic. The environmental characteristics may be less obvious in the cities of Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia as they can be masked by technologies, such as airconditioning and heating systems. Nevertheless, the specific environmental conditions of each site need to be recognized so the urban designer can incorporate elements into a project that will reduce energy costs and the production of greenhouse gases while creating a healthy and productive place for people to live.
