Abstract

Over a century on from the AAUP’s Declaration of Principles, the rhetoric of academic freedom continues to resonate with scholars around the world. In a period when academics are expected to meet the demands of funding bodies, student-customers and institutional regulations, the legacy of academic freedom recalls a bygone era of professional autonomy few wish to jettison entirely. Issues such as the introduction of national anti-terrorism legislation provide a useful rallying point for those keen to remember past principles.
