Marked by Freud, Mitchell, and the Freudian Project

  • Chapter
Juliet Mitchell and the Lateral Axis

Abstract

Juliet Mitchell is considered to belong to the Independent School of British Psychoanalysis, in which she was trained. Such claims necessarily involve simplifications and soon require amending. One qualification of is that, while psychoanalysts of the Independent School of Psychoanalysis often have a loose, even sometimes a cavalier relationship to Freud, this is not at all the case with Mitchell. Among the prominent figures of the Independent School she is arguably the most deeply immersed in Freud. Indeed within British psychoanalysis her relationship with him is one of the distinctive features of her work.
