Turning Teaching Inside Out

Part of the book series: Community Engagement in Higher Education ((CEHE))

Abstract

Walking to my very first Inside-Out class back in January 2009, I could not have imagined that a couple of years later, as part of an extended family, I would be assisting in the training of future Inside-Out instructors. For me, and for the rest of the Inside-Out alumni who form the Michigan Theory Group (TG), the student-trainer transition has been characterized by a collective willingness to make the program work. We accept and embrace our diversity; we value and benefit from the different skills each one of us has to offer; we compromise when our views conflict; and we strive to improve ourselves through ongoing dialogue, practice, and study.1
