The American Educational System: Abuses and Alternatives

Abstract

When I was eleven, I transferred from a rural school to an urban one and experienced the culture shock that so many children go through when making such transitions. Living with an educator, my beloved grandmother, made it possible for me to examine the differences between the two school systems I had attended. Given a glimpse of the education debate years before I was consciously aware of it, I still needed many years before I was able to see the systemic problem coherently. Participating in the Inside-Out program has given me the information I need to begin a proper analysis of what needs to be done to recreate the educational system. I now see the monumental betrayal that so many of my peers and I had experienced, and I have the opportunity to do something about it.
