Abstract

The recommendations for optimizing the LA that we have made in this book so far can be summarized as follows: (1) teach chunks instead of relying on learner-autonomous, incidental chunk-uptake owing to awareness-raising alone; (2) select chunks for targeting not just on the basis of frequency but also on the basis of evidence of collocational strength and ‘teachability’; (3) in order to improve the chances of retention, complement noticing by also encouraging elaboration of meaning and form; and (4) reveal non-arbitrary properties of chunks to make them more memorable.
