Abstract
The Guinness Book of World Records is a publishing success story. Further, its very existence leads to the most amazing, frequently amusing and sometimes utterly pointless feats of human endurance, stupidity and waste. What is it about people who swallow massive amounts of food or liquid in incredibly short periods, or who take part in marathon orgies of talking, or skipping or jumping to receive a few lines in the great book?
