War Renunciation and Abolishment by Japan

Abstract

Humans did not learn enough from World War II, as is evidenced by their engagement in subsequent wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and many other armed conflicts all over the globe. Perpetual wars illustrate the ongoing normalization of violence as a political response to conflict. This chapter reviews an initiative to transform political conflicts without resorting to war. Japan’s history of international violence renders it an important case in the study of applied peace philosophy. Japan invaded other Asian countries in World War II, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 20 million people. Adding to that tragedy were the deaths of approximately 3.1 million Japanese, including over 200,000 people who were killed by atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Makino, 2008). Many people have been killed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places because force has been used to solve problems instead of sustained dialogue and negotiation. However, it is encouraging that a manual Conflict Transformation by Peaceful Means1 has been used for training ambassadors, members of the United Nations, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), professors, students, and even disputants in conflict (Galtung & Jacobsen, 2000).
