Abstract
What impact has the “Winning-at-all-costs” mentality had on college sports? How does this mentality impact African American (The term African American and Black will be used interchangeably (Cavil, The athletic experience at historically Black Colleges and Universities: Past, present, and persistence, 2015)) college athletes and intersect with academic fraud? Although considered commonplace among the sports field, the ambiguity of these questions forges numerous answers. Still, with the inclusion of racial discourse, these questions converge and fuel dialogue on the sociocultural constraints as well as the racial contexts encompassing each facet of the surrounding complexities.
This chapter uses critical race theory to examine the winning-at-all-costs mentality in college sports. Moreover, the authors strive to explore the sociocultural constructs surrounding African American college athletes and being labeled as a “Snitch,” therefore providing a cultural and racial evaluation of National Collegiate Athletic Association and academic fraud.
