Abstract
This chapter brings to bear a multilingual ethnolinguistic approach to walls as barriers and boundaries. The symbolism of walls and breaking them down is investigated in light of the Berlin Wall and the way its destruction has been recuperated by ideological, religious, and diverse cultural discourses. A corpus analysis of walls reveals that the ways walls are perceived and understood changes over time. And numerous examples of the ways walls are considered as necessary and protective are used to contrast with the dominant discourse of the need to break walls down.
