Abstract
This chapter considers the impact of Russian revolutionary Yekaterina Breshkovskaya’s long-term friendships with American feminists and ‘gentlemen socialists’ on her reputation in the United States. By also tracing her presence in US print media, we can see how she became ‘Babushka’, the grandmotherly persona that she adopted over time. Finally, by exploring the creation and use of photographs of her, the final section looks at the visual side of Breshkovskaya’s public image. Combined, these three factors demonstrate how celebrity status was conferred and what kinds of political influence it could generate.
