Abstract
This chapter reviews previous research on language ideologies in news media and new and social media. Although there has been increasing research in these areas, there is less work on new and social media data, and there is a gap in comparative research on ideologies across different cultures and languages. In particular, most previous research has drawn on monolingual data rather than comparable media data in different languages. To address these gaps, the chapter introduces the focus of the book, that is, the role of language ideologies in Canadian news, new and social media, and the increasingly diversified way in which such ideologies come to impact upon the “offline” Canadian nation-state.
