Abstract

Observations of jets from young stars and of their bow shocks from the ultraviolet to centimetre wavelengths have revealed many of the characteristic properties of these objects. Here I summarize how optical imaging and spectrocopy have contributed to our understanding of the morphology, the kinematics, and the excitational state of the gas in these objects.
