Abstract

This article reviews typical applications of ESR spectroscopy to the radical polymerization of vinyl and diene compounds. ESR studies on the propagating radicals in both frozen and solid states are outlined, and the origin of complications attendent upon the analysis of ESR spectra are discussed. ESR observations of the intermediate species in the radical polymerization by the flow method and the spin-trapping method are surveyed, along with the chemical structure and reactivity of the propagating radicals. Special cavities designed for enhancing the sensitivity of ESR spectrometers to radical polymerization are described. These cavities allow determinations of the conformation of propagating radicals as well as the propagation rate constants for several monomers under conditions similar to usual radical polymerizations.
