Abstract
Conflict between nations and communities has resulted in war throughout history: from ancient times (Persian wars, Gallic wars) to the World Wars and the more recent Gulf wars. Strangely enough, these hostilities have contributed to the evolution of medicine, especially of the surgical specialties. Hippocrates put it very succinctly: “He who would become a surgeon should join the army and follow it.” There were many other factors involved in the development of thoracic surgery, taking it to the level it stands today. This particular part of the human anatomy has inherent issues not seen with other regions of the body. It was not a stand alone effort involved in the progress but the combined efforts of anesthesiologists, physiologists, surgeons, immunologists and equipment developers among the many who contributed over a long time towards this specialty.
“The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.”—Winston Churchill
