Abstract
In consideration of the above-mentioned contributions of the Emperors to the field of biology, the International Prize for Biology was founded in 1985. The medal, featuring a design motif taken from the image of a hydrozoan colony, and an award are presented, together with the Imperial gift, a silver vase, to that individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of basic research in a field of biology in that year. A new field is even selected every year so as to throw light on such inconspicuous but important fields of research as taxonomy and phylogeny. The process of the foundation of the Prize and the profile and achievement of every former recipient are described. Finally, an appeal is made for increased support for the sciences, biology and basic researches.
