Abstract

Installation method of Fiber Optical Cable (FOC) used to telecommunication system is mostly laid in the same trench with the pipeline with regard to oil and gas pipeline project in China. However, the cable will suffer the effect of the external stress due to thaw collapse effect of oil and gas pipelines on permafrost strata in permafrost zone. Based on force analysis of the cable and comparison with the HDPE silicon core tube in the state of thaw collapse effect, it is shown that the resistance of HDPE silicon core tube to thaw collapse effect is greater than optical cable commonly used in engineering. The result of the research shows that the operation of the FOC will more safety and reliable if the cable is to be installed in HDPE tube in the same trench with the pipeline in permafrost region. Therefore, this method is recommended to install FOC in permafrost region.
