Abstract

High-resolution optical observations of the Sun in the pre-Hinode era, typically at spatial resolutions of 1–2 arcsec, are reviewed, and the new findings of Hinode with 0.2 arcsec resolution for magnetic flux tubes, polar fields, canopy structure, and horizontal magnetic fields are presented. In combination with the X-ray and extreme ultraviolet instruments on Hinode, I present observations of coronal waves in the context of coronal heating and the acceleration of the solar wind from active regions.
