Abstract
Cancers are an extremely varied group of disorders, with multiple associated and causative factors. As yet, all causes are not known. Homocysteinemia too has multiple metabolic ramifications in neoplastic tissues. It may be a sequelae of the high cellular turnover evidenced in tumors. It could also result from treatment with antimetabolites like methotrexate and 6-azauridine triacetate, which interfere with homocysteine metabolism and increase its circulating concentrations. On the other hand, some polymorphisms of homocysteine metabolism are associated with a lower incidence of some carcinomas and some other polymorphisms are associated with an increased incidence of other carcinomas. Thus, the picture of the association of neoplasias with homocysteinemia is as yet hazy and needs many more multicentric studies to clarify it.
