Abstract
This chapter presents a case study of the tourism events in Wanjin Basilica of the Immaculate Conception following its 100th year of establishment. It describes the impact of teaming with government-organized Christmas celebration programs and discusses challenges and opportunities over a period of five years. Cross analysis of interviews, field observations and multiple electronic documents manifest an interactive and inter-connective relationship between tourism promotion and evangelization, as well as an empowerment of the local community. However, its religious spirit and legacy seem to be threatened with managerial issues of the festival events and over-demands of commitment. The study suggests that the government and the Catholic Church in Taiwan should reflect on their roles and responsibilities in sustaining the basilica’s originality and heritage.

The Catholics in Taiwan are governed by the Chinese Regional Bishops’ Conference (CRBC). There are seven diocesan bishops, each considered as the highest spiritual leaders of the diocese they govern. While every parish has its patron’s celebration once a year, the bishop does not always attend and host it. There are 59 parishes listed in the Handbook of Kaohsiung Catholic Diocese, 2014.
