Abstract
Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains the leading cause of death in developed countries. Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) are the clinical manifestations of a sudden reduction in perfusion and oxygenation to the myocardium, typically resulting in heart attacks. Each year, more than 20 million patients worldwide with CHD experience ACS, and one-third of these individuals die from complications of CAD (Go et al. in Circulation 129(3):399–410, 2014). Atherosclerosis, a chronic disease typically asymptomatic at early stages, is characterized by the thickening of the arterial vessel wall due to the buildup of athermanous plaque in the inner lining of arteries (Ross in Nature 362(6423):801–809, 1993, Ross in N Engl J Med 340(2):115–126, 1999).
