Abstract
For more than 25 years I have been studying the pedagogical practices of teachers who are successful with African American students. My rationale for this inquiry came from my early days in graduate school where it seemed everything I read discussed the near impossibility of teaching poor, Black children. I read studies that suggested that poor, Black families were dysfunctional and incapable of raising healthy, happy children able to achieve in school classrooms.
