Abstract
A new Hitchcock film is always an important event. This corpulent fellow with a clumsy silhouette may be the most clever man in the movies. His departure for Hollywood in 1939 was undoubtedly a heavy loss for British cinema, whose renaissance would not have been so late in coming had the author of The Thirty-Nine Steps [1935] continued to work in the British studios. I am not sure, though, if Hitchcock has not partly lost what Hollywood has gained.
