Abstract

The region of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is a political construct which refers to all the Eastern bloc countries west of the former Soviet Union, the independent states in former Yugoslavia, the three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), and sometimes Austria. Over the past twenty-five years, all the countries in the region except Austria underwent transition from communist rule to democracy and from state-rule economy to liberal market economy. The former Yugoslav Republics became independent countries, some after a period of ethnic conflicts and war.
