Abstract
The Republic of Korea has achieved remarkable development in education over the last six decades. Korea became a nation in 1948 and reached universal education at the primary and secondary levels within a half century; meanwhile it entered the stage of universal education at the postsecondary level, as more than 80% of high school graduates go on to further education. From the qualitative perspective, Korea’s class sizes and pupil-to-teacher ratios are equivalent to those of member nations in the OECD.
