Abstract

ALP is an ideas-intensive project set in a real historical context, so it is appropriate to give some account of those ideas and their origins. This chapter discusses changes in British society in the period leading up to the start of ALP, and aspects of the educational context, in particular the context of community education in Scotland. This is followed by an account of Paulo Freire’s life and ideas, and the educational method he developed in Brazil and Chile.
