Abstract

Epidemic parotitis (EP) is an acute self-limiting respiratory infectious disease caused by mumps virus that occurs commonly in children and teenagers. Clinically, it is characterized by nonsuppurative swelling and pain in the parotid gland. The virus can also invade the nervous system and various glandular tissues causing meningoencephalitis, pancreatitis, orchitis, and ovaritis.
