Abstract
An ammonite zonation of the Cretaceous period is presented, which largely follows the Geological Time Scale 2012, with illustrations of several index species. Concepts of Cretaceous ammonite biostratigraphy are briefly discussed and characteristic examples of the types of zones and ammonite events are given. Furthermore, accomplishments and limits of ammonite biostratigraphy are presented, including aspects of evolution, preservational modes and taxonomic concepts. Finally, the value of Cretaceous ammonite biostratigraphy is briefly compared to that of other macrofossils.
