The Gastrointestinal System

Abstract

The nine water-soluble vitamins, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, folate, biotin, and vitamins B 6 , B 12 , and C are a diverse group of organic compounds that are consumed in the daily diet in microgram to milligram amounts and are essential for normal growth, development, and maintenance of the human organism. These compounds are generally metabolized to forms that serve as coenzymes in various biochemical reactions; vitamin C is an exception, as it functions as an essential water-soluble antioxidant.
