Abstract

One way of acquisition which has not been dealt with in the previous chapter and seems to be in direct conflict with the principles embodied in it is legal deposit. At variance with selection and distribution, which has been urged, there are the completeness and centralisation which are the most typical and characteristic features of the dépôt légal. In spite of the great difficulties legal deposit thus presents, the cultural importance is nowadays considered to be an ample justification for either introducing or continuing the system. The situation in that respect varies a great deal in different countries: in some legal deposit has existed for a long time, in others it was introduced comparatively recently; again, there are countries where it does not yet exist.
