Abstract

Ideas, even more than art, must stand the test of time. By that standard, the two books that Peter Matthews published in the 1970’s (Matthews 1972; 1974) are in a class by themselves. Their influence, small at first, has grown gradually but steadily to the point where it is palpable in much of the most exciting work in morphology today (Anderson 1992; Beard 1992; Zwicky 1992, to name only a few). It is therefore especially noteworthy that Matthews has seen fit to revise his 1974 textbook.
