Second-Home Ownership

A Sustainable Semi-Migration

Tourism and Migration

Abstract

Wolfe’s (1951) study of owners, and users, of the summer cottages in Ontario, is a classic study of second home migration. However, similar studies of summer domestic travel to second homes were also being undertaken in Scandinavia in the same period (Finnveden, 1960; Hansen, 1969; Bohlin, 1982; see also Müller, Chapter Nine). Since Wolfe only examined summer cottages, and cottages in commercial resort areas, a comparison is not easily made between the Canadian and Scandinavian experiences of the period (Halseth and Rosenberg, 1995). Nevertheless, Scandinavia already had a strong tradition in second home development and after World War II, had a boom in cottage building, especially in coastal and mountain amenity areas.
