Abstract
Education and training in the life sciences in modern universities is mostly based upon a reductionistic, mechanistic, deterministic and causal-analytical approach to nature. From that viewpoint, life is an epiphenomenon of physio-chemical processes, not yet fully understood, just as consciousness is seen as being a metaphor for mechanistic brain process.
