Abstract

Measuring the dynamics of the large-scale structures in turbulent flows is currently a significant challenge. One technique used to extend curĀrent experimental capabilities is to use Linear Stochastic Estimation and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition as complementary techniques to examine the dynamics of the energetic motions. Heretofore, it has not been possible to assess the accuracy of this technique without measuring the full velocity field. It is demonstrated here that the accuracy of the technique can be assessed a priori using a transfer function that relates the estimated and actual POD coefficients for the flow.
