Abstract

Sweden has only been part of the European Union since 1995 and the administration is still engaged in a process of adaptation to meet the particular demands and opportunities created by membership. Several analyses (see, for example, Anon, 1998) have attempted to assess the efficacy of Sweden’s current fisheries system from a European perspective. No reasons have been identified for not continuing to operate within the framework of the existing management model, though a recent government bill (1997) has indicated that certain specific areas may need to be further developed in order to comply more fully with the requirements of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
