Abstract
The use of biotic agents, such as mammalian, avian and piscine herbivores, phytophagous insects, mites, nematodes and plant fungal diseases, to control weeds is based on the fact that these plant-attacking organisms can reduce their host plant populations to non-noxious levels of abundance, or can be manipulated in such a way as to do so. This form of weed control has developed considerably during the last 15 years to the extent that three main methods of using biotic agents can now be distinguished.
