Abstract

This chapter is an addition to the sequence of discussions of discrete systems. It is included here for several reasons. In terms of applications, if you are going to discuss fabric structures you need access to a membrane finite element. The plane stress/strain element which follows is probably the most simple finite element which can be discussed. Since the functional dependence of the element upon the node coordinates is so simple, it is an easy matter to apply perturbation methods to it.
