Abstract
Verkuyl’s work On the compositional nature of the aspects appeared as a dissertation in 1971 and was published a year later (Verkuyl 1972). It was to turn into a cornerstone in the development of aspectology. The linguistic analysis in it is based on the author’s mother tongue, Dutch, but the English translation equivalents supplied throughout show that the regularities revealed are also valid for English, and for other languages as well.

Later on in the book it will be seen that the regularities in question are closely linked to such fields of grammar as, to mention but a few, the use of articles and tenses (probably the two major problem fields of English grammar), the semantics of verbs, the semantics of abstract nouns, the use of temporal adverbials, etc.
