Abstract

Although as early as two decades ago a relative consensus was reached among linguists to view the perfective/imperfective aspectual opposition in languages like English in compositional terms1, since then the real foundations of aspect have nevertheless remained unclear in most studies of this notoriously difficult linguistic category. What is more, the compositional mechanism, which, according to one of the main assumptions in the present work, constitutes the basis for the proper understanding of aspect, has been incorrectly challenged in the literature (either directly or, in most cases, indirectly). As an unfortunate consequence, both its scientific importance and its true parameters remained, prior to the present work, virtually unrecognised.
