Abstract

This paper will begin by looking at a strange dialectic developing within our European Union between the whole and its parts, the centre and the periphery. It will argue that this is also reflected within the aims and purposes of science education. This is no unexplained happenstance; even a brief exploration of these two phenomena shows them to be interconnected in ways which might, if the analysis were correct, guide our research into science education down new and valuable pathways.
