Students and the Wave Geometrical Model of the Wave Propagation in a Three Dimensional Medium

  • Chapter
Research in Science Education in Europe

Abstract

This research analyses the difficulties encountered by students while learning wave phenomena in a three dimensional medium. Two types of waves (sound, light) and three types of situation (propagation in an open space, reflection, diffraction) are considered. The main question explored concerns the ways students use the concepts of “ray” and “wave surface” when drawing their ideas. Three tendencies are shown to recur: a geometric and mechanistic reasoning, a reduction in the number of variables, a materialisation of the concepts. Some school text-books have been analysed.
