Abstract

In this paper, the application of an improved approach to generate three-dimensional realizations of a highly heterogeneous braided river aquifer system is presented. The realizations are generated in three steps. First, a facies model is developed, using all available geological information. Then, stochastic realizations of the facies distribution are generated, using sequential conditional simulations (SIS). Here, in addition to the conventional SIS approach, direction trends are imposed on the variogram models. At last, based on the facies distribution and using multigaussian simulation, heterogeneous three-dimensional hydraulic conductivity fields are obtained. The generated images can then be validated by comparing statistical analysis results and evaluated effective aquifer parameters with results and parameters obtained from field measurements.
