Abstract
The editorial policy of Climatic Change welcomes the combination of material from several disciplines, and at the same time encourages guest editors to present papers in special issues devoted to a particular theme. This double opportunity was the primary incentive for planning and editing this special volume. From the very beginning it was intended to focus not only on natural aspects of climatic change, but also to include related topics in the social sciences.
