Abstract

In Chapter 2 the translation relation between two languages was defined by means of isomorphic string grammars. Chapter 3 introduced the M-grammar formalism, which is used in the actual Rosetta system. M-grammars have a more sophisticated syntactic component than string grammars, but the semantic component and the way in which the translation relation is defined are essentially the same. For both types of grammars, two sentences s 1 and s 2 of languages L 1 and L 2 are considered translation-equivalent if they can be derived by isomorphic syntactic derivation trees, which implies that they share a semantic derivation tree.
