Abstract
The purpose of this book is to offer the reader an in-depth view on machine translation (MT) by discussing in detail a particular method, called compositional translation, and a particular system, Rosetta, which is meant to translate between English, Dutch and Spanish, and which has been developed according to this method. The aim of this introductory chapter is (i) to sketch some of the major questions that rise within the field of MT, and (ii) to indicate which of these questions have been guiding the Rosetta enterprise.
