Abstract
The mission of Ambassador Benedetti covers a vital segment of the history of the Second Empire. Appointed to the Berlin post at the conclusion of the Danish war in 1864, he became a witness to the decisive struggle which ensued between Austria and Prussia soon after the peace treaty with Denmark had been signed in Vienna. Prussia’s victory at Sadowa and her subsequent rise to supremacy in Germany had far-reaching implications for the future of Europe and the Second Empire and thus gave added significance to Benedetti’s role. A study of his mission to Berlin would not be complete without an evaluation of his performance.
