Abstract
A frequent phenomenon of French politics has been the failure of the coalition government to achieve a successful program. Extreme of Left and Right may become so strong that they can lever the Center to the breaking point. It happened in 1948, in the infancy of the Fourth Republic; in 1934, in the senility of the Third Republic; and in 1828, near the end of the Restoration. The reason for this failure of the Center is usually found in the zeal and intransigeance of the two extremes, or in their desire to cultivate, rather than retard, the conditions leading to a confrontation.
