Abstract
In December 1938 a leading article appeared in “Nature” describing — better than anything I could write today — the needs of “Science and Learning in Distress”, and the motives of those engaged in rescue at that critical time. It brings back vividly the emergency of those days, and the efforts being made to meet it; and with the permission of the Editors it is reprinted here in full.
