Abstract
Previous conferences of the International Menopause Society concluded that climacteric symptoms and complaints are the product of an interaction between sociocultural, psychological and physical factors: “The psycho-social aspects of the menopause form an integral part of the picture and it is therefore misleading to look at the menopause and climacteric phase as purely biological phenomena” (van Keep and Humphrey, 1976). It was also agreed that the processes of interaction between social, psychological and physical factors were extremely complex and required much further study.
